where you will sit and contemplate your day
Amelia is an only child. She does not resent it, and she never questioned her parents' decision on the matter. She had always entertained herself, frolicking with weeds, playing with shadows. She had seen it as normal. It wasn't until she was older that most decided to have more than one child. Her cousin, always rude, always saying what wasn't meant to be said, had told her the reason for having two children was so that mourning wouldn't hurt so bad when the first died. Amelia hadn't liked that.
She had seen the two, dark and light, nearly inseparable. She envied their relationship; she still hadn't found a friend that she considered close. Friendship was hard to find here. She can see the male glance over at her, and she fights the urge to walk the other way. She doesn't fear they are gossiping about her; Amelia tries to find the best in others, her one tragic flaw, and she never assumes that someone can mean harm.
Sand shifts under her feet as she walks towards them, her head dropped lower than usual to avoid the sunlight that beats down on her. Her eyes water if she stares straight forward; she hasn't learned the skill of squinting without really squinting. It will develop in time.
As she approaches, she calls out to them, not wanting to intrude on a private meeting if they're having one. "Hello. I'm Amelia. I just wanted to introduce myself, since I haven't met either of you before." She nods towards each in turn and then smiles. They seem nice enough. "You two are socialites, right?" She's been trying to get to know all the scholars. It's best to know everyone in your field - it is only then that you can work together as one being.
