Shit happens.

Sometimes, very bad shit happens. Shit that potentially spells doom for all of them.

Now is one of those times. Baraqel’s best friend and son are both stolen. Baraqel’s psychotic father has just attained enough power to essentially cause global upheaval and distress. If the Nightmare and the Firestarter were once on level playing ground, the scales have shifted once again. He’s aware of it. Maybe Baraqel should be more bothered by this unsettling fact, by the cloud of simmering Lightning that has settled perpetually over the horizon in the direction of Desreal.

He finds Hypatia in the midst of the herd, near the Oasis.

His usual air of indifferent destruction is gone now; he walks slowly, his body a golden and crimson coil of crackling electricity and smoldering Lightning (how it contours to his hooves, quietly flames behind the passionate amber of his eyes, rises in wisps of smoke from his red mane).

“Hypatia,” he says with a sigh, a haphazard smile as he falls into a halt. “Everyone else,” he gives a distracted nod to whoever may or may not be near the Queen,

“On the plus side, we no longer have to worry about my mother going Shard-ape-shit on us all.” He blinks. A little tendril of mane ignites and rises off of his head. He flicks an ear, unbothered by the characteristic volatility of his Elements. “On the minus side, she has a big ugly successor who doesn’t like us much. Which may or may not be my fault.”

He shrugs – dysfunctional familiar relationships are sort of his thing. Thus why Memphis hates him, Cyan is mildly embarrassed by him, Kratos thinks he’s a pretentious prick and Kurai wants to obliterate him.

And now, a careless smile – roguish, reckless and utterly casual, “I hope you all like potentially catastrophic situations, ‘cause I sure do.”

That’s fairly obvious.
