for even to think wrongly
is better than not to think at all."
He makes her sizzle, and it tickles. Of course her water and fire mixed, but never like this, never from someone else. It was almost intimate, close. His water felt different than hers, as most Elements were crafted to their users. It was sweet and delicate (and perhaps a little silly). Her body heats again, but it is not from her element. Were she human and not mistress of fire, she would be blushing deep and full.
“Your water has a life of its own.” She comments offhand, looking away from his watery eyes and swirling mind.
They sit in a slightly uncomfortable, slightly comfortable (it’s confusing Hypatia much too much) silence. But she is explicitly aware of his lips against her body. She is rigid and frozen, and had Water been her first Element and not granted to her by the Diadem, her body would be frozen. Instead it heats itself more and more, as if fighting against the cooling of his lips, willing her not to feel it. But it’s there. Her tail, which is quite on fire, twitches nervously.
“That’s the problem with Vipers – we’re alone too much.” Of course, she’s not. She’s in their heads and hearts. But they are. They can’t feel her. “I wish it weren’t like that.” Her voice is falling into a whisper, like a child pouting.
She doesn’t want to listen to his mind, but when he’s staring at her like that, and when he’s so innocent and so open her Fire simply cannot take it. She delves into his mind fervishly, unable to hold back her curiosity, her sensations, her way of life. Her Fire greedily eats up all his thoughts and it makes her eyes grow warmer and warmer.
“Home missed you too.”
But he can’t read her mind, he doesn’t understand what she means.
She turns away from him, breaking the eye contact and willing him to be stronger. “I feel bad, being able to read all your thoughts like this, Sterling. It’s not fair.”
The sun continues setting, the world keeps moving. “Fenris really wanted you to stay.” Hypatia doesn’t want to think of how much better Andarin is for him. She stops – at a loss for what to say.
