Today was already starting to get warm but the sun had yet to come up. I woke up and could see the golden glow of a sun soon to rise. Renfield had yet to wake up as he just went to sleep not even an hour before daybreak. He was different than other horses, he slept while they were awake and at night when they were asleep he played. Sometimes he hunted for animals to kill and eat but most of the time (if he was too lazy) then he would just eat bugs that he found underneath rocks and on the leaves of things in passing. He did not eat grass of flowers or bark off of trees. In fact, Renfield was a complete carnivore, which was what made him such an Odd Thomas. It was strange that his brother did not turn out the same way at all, then again, Renfield was stillborn and as pale as the horse that Death himself rode. Maybe that is what made all the difference.
Andarin was a lot different than Ni’Srilan, it was more barren and a lot more hotter than the range and so I had to be careful with Renfield and his exposure to the sunlight. If he got too close to it, then something strange would happen and he would turn into ice. I knew he was different and perhaps that is why I chose to stay with him, horses like him did not come around often and – yes I do dare say it – it was kind of an empowering thing for me whenever I told the birds and the bees about him, about how I had a vampire for a best friend.
The sun was starting to make more of it’s presence known, the golden slit starting to illuminate the dunes in fiery shades of red and gold. It would not be long before the desert would be exposed to complete sunlight and the oasis to protect himself was very far away. So quickly and with a lot of determination, I started to rustle around in Renfield’s ear to try and wake him up. Renfield shifted, then to which he lazily flicked his ear and sent me flying across the gritty surface of the sandstone which he slept on. It did not take him long to realize what he did and so he woke up immediately after, his head shooting up with eyes wide and panic laced into the delicate, slightly female features of his face. “Oh no!” He shouted, searching for me. “I’m right here Renfield!” I said, just a ltitle bug on a nearby rock.
He didn’t see me.
“Renfield over here!” I jumped to catch his attention and he finally saw me when I did this. “Ah, Edward, I was afraid you left.” He said rather soberly, the hysteria in his deep voice dissolving as he walked to meet me. It took him several months (a year to be exact) to finally realize that four horse legs moved faster than six microscopic bug legs. When he was close I jumped to catch a piece of long stringy white hair. I scrambled up quickly to meet him between the eyes which crossed and tried to see me sitting right on his brow bone. I couldn’t help but chitter in my little buggy voice, “Oh Renfield you are so silly.” I said, but Renfield shook his head. “Edward I had the strangest dream…” He started, I interrupted him before he went on a tangent, he always did, but now it was almost an emergency.
“That’s very nice Renfield but you do know the sun is coming up soon right?”
“It is?”
“It is.”
“Oh Edward what are we going to do? The oasis is so far away!” Renfield hated being turned into ice because he said it hurt. Sometimes I think he mistook the pain for being cold, but I wasn’t as unfortunate as he was so I would never know.
“Renfield find someone I can’t do anything for you.” I said before wrapping myself around the silky white hairs of his colorless mane. And so Renfield ran as fast as possible to the nearest horse he saw. “Please please, I need the night! Please I need night!” He shouted, his rail thin body already frosting over with golden glow of sunrise biting at his back.
