ISRA; d a n c i n g in the d a r k The other horse appears as if out of nowhere, and it is all Isra can do not to flatten her ears, settle into that familiar defensive stance. For a moment, she thinks wistfully—if only it could be— Then she sees the lion. The lion looks rather large. His teeth look rather sharp. All in all, Isra is rather ill at ease with him. If the mare, with her easy aura of knowing this desert, her strange headpiece, and the flames leaping from her, is not intimidating enough, she consorts with wild, and most likely dangerous, beasts. Isra takes a cautious half-step back, then thinks better of it with her hoof halfway in the air, placing it down again and continuing cautiously forward. All this is in the space of a heartbeat, and then Isra’s guard flares, strong and alarmed, as the mare speaks. This is her nightmare. Isra, who will give her trust to no one, has met someone who can take it. She flinches, a shudder passing over her coat, body stiffening, muscles tensing—then decides against it all, forcing herself to relax. The other mare seems pleasant enough; certainly she is welcoming. “That is reassuring.” She tries for lightheartedness—fails miserably. Maybe something simpler? “I thank you for the welcome. You seem to know my name. So I wonder—what is yours?” It comes off much more stilted than she wanted, more hostile, more suspicious.
