He waits for her, above the oasis which is calm and silent. Ni’Srilan is a quiet place, and it comforts the reclusive habits of the ghost. There is no need to linger here long, Hypatia plays with his thoughts like marbles in a child’s hand and she comes to him as readily and accepting as ever. He understand her hesitations, her confusion in his character but there is earnestness in his face that he would remain with the Vipers. Solira did not beckon to him, in fact he sought to avoid the home of his estranged daughter, and Andarin certainly would not see him in the mountains again. Hypatia has remained Fantome’s constant in his turmoil, and now he was enlisted to repay that kindness.
When she comes she is alight with the pallor of fledgling flames, the black wraith smiles genuinely to her, almost sheepish in its thankfulness. Her voice is reassuring to him even when she tells him that his dearest friend will not be in the desert. But something within him holds to the hope that Aian will come, he does not think that she would forever remain a Rogue.
Hypatia asks him the question he knew was coming, the question he cannot truly explain. “There was nothing left for me there. Aian was leaving; Delilah has disappeared – taking our son with her… The Wolves changed into something I could not and did not want to be. The are the Wolves, but there is no unity amongst them – they sever themselves into small packs of ‘friends,’ they segregate as they choose, even if it means casting aside or scorning one of their own.”
The horses he had known scattered, vanished, or change so much that Fantome no longer knew who they were. He had become a stranger to Andarin. That the only way he can explain himself to Hypatia. He remembers the siren song of Mab when she was a prisoner of the Wolves – he recalls his jealousy of her being a Viper under Hypatia’s rule…He feels the winter wind and the snow-smoke spires and cliff’s edge. He cannot lie in his mind; he also came for the alluring company of Mab. Fantome lets Hypatia know this, if only by thinking such thoughts. He admires Ni’Srilan’s espionage, and knows their talents only need more urging and soon they will become a fearful thing in Ersatz. His reasons are not so much as to why he left, but as to why he came.
