The reclusive Fantome was never someone that people would think to become a betrayer. However, when circumstances change so vastly, never ending changes, when attitudes and friends change the ghost changes too. And that is why Fantome is a traitor of Andarin. He knows Hypatia will ask him why {again} and he knows he won’t be able to fully explain his reasons and hopefully she’ll invade his mind and come to understanding on her own.
The black wraith motions with a flicker of his ears and a step – inviting Baraqel to walk with him. “Yes, I’m a Mercenary,” he replies with awkwardness, his tongue stiff amongst strangers. When Baraqel says he has not spoken to many spies Fantome could readily reply that he has not spoken to many Warriors – after all he had harbored a general dislike for that class until he met Mab. “Being a spy is like…” he pauses and thinks, “being a spy is like breathing, it’s like going home.” How odd, that intruding on the private moments on others, learning their characters without them ever knowing you or your name is like going home, but that is how the ghost feels when he dissects someone to steal them.
Fantome looks to the Gold as they lurch along the quiet sands. “How long have you lived in Ni’Srilan? I don’t recall seeing you on my first two visits.”
