And as a result he is like neither of them. Cyan is the scientist. Reserved, off-beat, disconcertingly calm and insatiably curious, he is locked in an inexorable clinch with sadism and decency and the tendency of this inquisitive nature to become cruelly manipulative. He’s something between a nerd and a rocker decked out in a white labcoat. He’s a 1 on the PH scale and he’s carcinogenic to boot – Cyan, my chemical conundrum, and presently we find him where we usually find him when he’s not at the Academy. The sun beats down on his midnight-black coat, and the heat catalyzes the bizarre conundrum of reactions transpiring beneath his thin desert-bred skin. He takes a step into the Oasis, and, with a faint sizzling sound, the water vaporizes and swirls in pale green spirals toward the heavens. Reality. Big dragon-horse grandfathers do not go along with Cyan’s theory of reality. No. He shakes his head, banishing the thought to the farthest recesses of his mind with a sigh. Why the hell am I not at the Academy? he wonders for the umpteenth time. Oh, right. Renata quit. Is there a reason why so many horses are idiots? Is it an epidemic? Can it be stopped? Is there some blood-borne virus that can be exterminated to rid the world of this plague? Probably not, because if it were true than by all logic someone, somewhere along the way would’ve been intelligent enough to discover it. Cyan shakes his head, shutting his eyes for a moment, and when he re-opens those still green orbs they settle upon a figure by the edge of the Oasis, watching him. He blinks, beneath a fringe of emerald forelock, a single ear flicking forward. “What.” It’s a statement, not a question, accompanied by a long, slow blink of his acidic eyes.
