She has a certain charm – the kind of charm that Lewis-dot diagrams have, only with something else (something perhaps less…explicitly scientific?) thrown in there as well. The charm of simplicity, in that he instantly knows very much about how she works and finds nothing against which to guard himself, no pretenses to poke and prod and dissect and perhaps because of this she is very much protected from the pervasive manipulation of his typical demeanor. He does not need to question and challenge her, because he is already content with what he knows.
You’d think he’d be bored, but he’s not – he’s even more interested, as if trying to analyze a breath of fresh air after spending a day underground.
“Some horses can stay around for years without ever losing that ‘new girl’ feeling,” he remarks with a shadow of a smile, his acid-green gaze drifting down to the sand beneath them for a moment. He looks up again. “And then some come in like they own the place from day one. There’s no saying which one is better – although it’s obvious that the latter is more annoying,” another little smile, a nonchalant shrug, “It’s all about how comfortable you are.”
Cyan’s awkward, too. He’s awkward because he’s too analytical, so much an objective creature that it renders him almost entirely disaffected, and occasionally even cruel. He’s awkward because there’s no one in the world like him.
“Yeah, I was born here,” he says when she remarks about his ease on the sand, “And I still feel like the new guy sometimes.” that, Cyan, is what happens when you’re, um, glowing green.
Sorry.
“You’ll get your footing on the sand eventually,” he glances down at it, tenuously holding together beneath them, “Your brain learns to compensate in time. You’ll be able to recognize the patches that will slip, and which will stay firm. Adaptability is an interesting thing,”
Okay, as long as he doesn’t start using big Latin words.
