…. training and socializing your Filas is, in my opinion, right on the button.
On the Fila message boards there are some, one fellow especially, that constantly preach that training a Fila is not necessary and a waste of time. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. In Texas, for example, there are several Fila owners who actually train their dogs and as a result their dogs are not the fear aggressive, back biting, anti-social and weak nerved dogs that many “working dog” people think they are.
I recently attended a Fila training session near Ft. Worth, TX that had attendees from as far away Phoenix, Arizona. I watched Filas doing long sends, going over and through various obstacles and even leaping out of a vehicle window to protect her owner from an attack. These are behaviors that, in the eyes of many, Filas just can’t do. Well, I can tell them, it just ain’t true.
I have no doubt that there are many Filas out there that, in the hands of responsible and educated owners, can actually do protection work and be relatively stable dogs. While a proper Fila should certainly not be a Therapy Dog, it’s really a shame that so many uneducated Fila owners, and even breeders, relegate their dogs to a life of solitude and of being essentially “junkyard” dogs, solely because of a lack of training.
