So at this point we are just playing tug with a long rope. His out is getting pretty good, though it's not 100% yet. He absolutely loves tug, more than any other game, and we intersperse obedience, make him sit, lay down, shake, and so on in between allowing him to take the tug. We're total amateurs, but that's how we've been doing it- trying to get him to go in and out of high excitement and allow us to pet him and mess with him- not get so excited he's out of control.
However, he's been doing something that looks really cool but I'm not sure is a good thing overall- when we give him the tug he has been jumping into the air and shaking it with his whole upper body- he can jump as high as my head with it. Most dogs I've seen kind of crouch low when they tug, and he does too, but he also jumps around like crazy, thrashing like a shark, sometimes even spinning with the tug in his mouth.(Those of you that have been at a show with us will be familiar with his moves.)
Should we be trying to train this out? Again, it's only tug. He's never been on a sleeve and might not for a while. But I honestly don't know if this habit of his will be an issue later- he is jumping right at head height, having a fantastic time. I would be worried he'd hit someone right in the face. Right now he is totally in play mode- would that change if he was up against a person?
Really no idea.
He's very pleased with himself, though:
