So while we're on the topic of dominance and food, something odd happened today and I was wondering what people thought could be up. Our old cat has an automatic feeder in the bathroom. This evening it dispensed her kibble, she ate a little bit of it, and then went back to sleep. A little later I took a shower, and Vic, as he always does, came with me into the bathroom to guard me- he sits with his back against the bathtub facing the door. (Yes, I have tried locking him out- he figured out how to jump up and push the locking mechanism out of the wall. Seriously) About 20 minutes later I got out of the shower and put my pajamas on and was brushing my teeth and noticed that the cat's food was still sitting there, unfinished by her and untouched by Vic for the nearly forty minutes he's been hanging out in the bathroom. My question is this- why didn't he eat it? Granted, his leave it is pretty good, and he usually waits for permission to eat- but almost an hour, with me out of sight for most of it? I wouldn't expect that. And he did know it was there- he likes to stand in the doorway and watch the cat eat, the bathroom is small, and he was lying almost against the feeder. He also was hungry- I fed him dinner after my shower.
Do you think it was:
1- A pack hierarchy thing- he thinks the cat is a mean, weird little dog, after all. Would he not eat it because he knows it's hers?
2-He's eaten raw almost all his life. Would he not recognize it as food?
3-Is protecting me from shower monsters such serious business he would ignore food in order to stand guard?
4-Any other reason you can think of. I'm curious- he's such a chow hound it's hard to imagine him ignoring food.
