I absolutely agree with you, Gin, that it's nature and culture- the puppy is dominant, establishes that position in the litter, but then is also reinforced in that behavior by her family tolerating it. Vic is the most dominant dog I have ever handled, ever, and I do try to use that, instead of trying to crush it, (which would obviously be a disaster) but that doesn't mean he gets to be dominant to me. So, I think it is nature, but I also think it is possible to train it out if you catch it early.
