Sherri is right. Dogs basically all have three drives. 1 is sex drive this explains itself. 2 is prey drive which is look a cat running lets chase. 3 is defense which is oh crap i am in my den and there is a bear coming to steal my food or make me food I will fight to protect my family. Of course thats a really brief explanation. every breed and dog is different. With Boerboels some work in prey for fun others are more defensive and serious. When you tell Oden to get me he is going to do just that and he is very effective. Debbie tells Boomer to get me and he gets all riled up looking for a good game of tug. Now boomer as a fine tuned protection dog will be working at 60% prey 40% defense Oden I think could get to to 30% prey 70% defense maybe a little more even than that. ones not better than the other its just different personalities and I take a different approach to working each one.
