Dear Great Dane
Let me start by saying that I lack technical knowledge in these matters. On the other hand, I do have lots of experience.
Over the years we've had dogs which were not always well received by the dog owning public at large and have sometimes chosen to vary our walking routines so that we weren't putting our dogs in the way of undue confrontation. The big idea being that this was fairer to the dog than constantly making an issue of things with other dogs and their humans. Delicate thing to balance though, young dogs need to socialise and we all learn from our mistakes whatever our age or species.
Personally I find the prospect of a nine month old Great Dane bounding towards me off the leash quite appealing and take the view that my dogs getting a fright now and then is good for their character.
In short if your dog came to greet one of mine and I were worried I'd call my dog to me rather than shout at your dog. Heigh ho.
As to your dog running back to your car, utterly brilliant in some ways, running to safety. Two of ours will run back to me when they're frightened and I'm always glad when they do.
Anyway, good luck with your Great Dane and do remember that I Know B*gger All.

: Our 9 month GD was really friendly, but as he
: gets bigger people are starting to be louder
: and more strict with him and he's getting
: nervous. He went to greet another dog in
: the woods this morning, and the dogs owner
: shouted at him. He turned and ran back to
: our car. I told the man that he'd
: frightened him, and he laughed!
: What should I do?
