Dear Mavis,
My dogs travel in the car all the time in a variety of travel crates. Provided these allow the dogs room to move and adjust their position there is no problem. I would agree with Imogen and Jo that this is an individual decision. However,if the dog is not safely restrained in the car they are in danger if you have to brake suddenly--- and so are you. It has been known for people to be killed/seriously injured by the force of their dogs' body hitting them, if they have been unrestrained in the car.
The crates can have small water containers in them and it is possible to get heat reflecting covers and small fans for them to help keep them cool during hot weather ( these are available from a variety of pet supply firms including a firm called petcetera who are based in Shropshire)My dogs get accustomed to the crates from a young age and are happy to go into them at any time, but I would stress that they should not be left in crates for hours as this will mean they get bored and will be understimulated, as well as affecting their muscle mass if they are left in crates long term.

: Dear Mavis
: My dogs travel in harnesses attached to
: seatbelts too, which I believe is safe and

: about people's experience of cages too.
