Hi Mavis,
I think it's very much a matter of what works for you and what keeps you and them safe. My three travel in the back of our estate car loose with a grid to stop them coming through, but friends have cages and they work well. They do keep the dog restrained (as do your belt/harness) in the event of a collision, so that might well cut down any harm they might sustain. What sort of car do you have - one you can put a travel cage in?
