Could somebody please help? I am trying to fit pads to my brakes but it appears to be a physical impossibility. There just doesn't appear to be enough clearance to push them on. I've loosened the allen-key nut (whatever that does)and I still can't squeeze the plate with the rods on in far enough to clear the end of the caliper. Also, why is one side of the caliper hole at rear covered with a rubber plug? And, do the pads just float either side of the disc? Is there nothing to keep them separated? Cheers Woodypear

I covered this issue in a previous post back in the spring. http://members7.boardhost.com/KazumaMammoth/msg/1237399464.html The calipers are fixed and the disk pads "float" because the piston should retract far enough for clearance between the pad and rotor. Make sure the caliper is properly centered and also make sure you use some thead lock on the bolts holding the calipers. Jeff Camo Mammoth

Thanks Jeff. I had read your article but I got somewhat confused with your terminology (caliper,rotor,caliper mount plate, caliper support, support plate, vehicle mount - are any of these the same?)(I'm a visual learner I guess). Either way, this doesn't answer my question about that rubber plug at the rear of the caliper where I guessed there'd be another allen key. Can I either pull this out or poke it through? Sorry about that but there are no illustrations to refer to so I used terminology used for Ford disk brake calipers. The rubber plug covers a hole for a pin on one side. The two allen nuts limit the travel on the other side. You need to put the inside nut back in the same place and use the second nut to lock the first one in place after you have changed the pads. Take both nuts out and the rubber plug. Spray WD-40 into the holes to let the guide pins slide better. You really need an extremely large set of channel locks to compress the piston all the way into the caliper. The old pads are difficult to remove but the new ones are even harder to put in. It is just a lousy design. Maybe someone at a Polaris Ranger dealership can help you change the pads. Jeff Camo Mammoth

Thanks Jeff. Unfortunately I'm in an isolated location so I've got to muddle through it myself, but your last thread explained it a lot clearer to me. Wish me luck woodypear
