I took a long Mammoth ride today with all the family, it was pretty hot outside (90 deg.) and I found that there is to much heat in the engine bay (my thigh caugh on fire... just kidding ) but the engine bay cover was extremely hot. This might be a consequence of my skid plate who's blocking the cold air from underneath the mammoth I saw that SNIPE installed a vent on the cover and a 3" fan on the belt compartment. I thinking of mounting 2 (4 3/4" square) 100 cfm fan on each side of the mammoth and maybe an other one on the front of the engine cover to force the hot air toward the back Anybody have installed a fan to cool down the engine bay ? If yes I would like to know what kind of fan did you use and where did you mount it How do you guys get rid of this problem ? The cover does get very hot even without skid plate. I insulated my enging cover and Aaron sells a kit to do the same thing. I bought materials off internet.

I just took this pictures, the engine cover start to melt... and the oil cap too... THIS is hot !!! MAX Sorry, if some time you don't understand what I'm talking about, I'M FRENCH... by the way, some time I don't understand what you say, it's probably because I'M FRENCH !!!

Hi Max...I havent been on the forum for a while, so I am happy to also welcome you. We all agree that the engine cover and surrounding area get very warm and hot over extended use and some owners (including myself)have used insulated foil to divert some of it...but I have never seen an oil cap melt!!!!! Have you noted what the water temp is when you are on extended runs? The max I ever reached during summer in Florida is 205 deg, but that was under a high speed load and I quickly cooled down when I stopped....typically I run up to about 190 deg...with heat generated like that, i would also have concerns with the gas tank and belts....Anyway keep us posted... Hi Glenn, The new dashboard of the mammoth have digital readout, the water temp. is graduated in 5 steps... normally the temp. stay in the middle (step 3), but when I took that long ride I have climbed a hill with a good slope for about 5 minutes in high gear, as soon as I reach the top of the hill the temp. hit the fifth step and the gauge start to flash, so I let it idle for a couple minutes (until the temp. get down to normal) -The cover is already insulated with some aluminum foil (look like aluminum duct tape) -The accessory belt look new -The CVD belt look also new... hey! let me think... it's a brand new carlisle belt !!! I have no other gauge installed to compare, but I have in my toolbox a non-contact thermometer may I use that to compare the temperature ? If yes where should I take the reading ? Hi Max... The temp sender for my digital guage is located in the top rad hose. It is an aftermarket unit, but is pretty accurate. I also use a wetting agent in the antifreeze called water wetter which also helps the antifreeze work better to get rid of the heat. The insulating foil I use is about 3/16ths of an inch thick, which I taped to the inside of the engine cover.... Glenn

I will install one just to see what those steps mean Today I have received the fan I have ordered to install in the front of the engine cover (4 3/4" 120 cfm) to blow the hot air over the engine toward the back... and also 2 grills to install on the side of the mammoth (where is the Kazuma logo) to force air under the seat... as soon as I get it done I will post pictures MAX MAX Sorry, if some time you don't understand what I'm talking about, I'M FRENCH... by the way, some time I don't understand what you say, it's probably because I'M FRENCH !!!

Still to much heat, even with the fans and 2X 4" holes on the side... The water temp is perfect, so this is obliviously not the problem... I found that all that heat is coming from the exhaust manifold. I will burn my finger, if I touch the front metal frame that hold the seat (this piece of metal is about 1/2" spaced from the exhaust manifold). The access door in the front of the engine (marked KAZUMA), stay at about 150 deg. Is this normal ??? Hi Max.....I have the same set up on mine, with very little space between the exhaust manifold and the frame that runs in front of it. The access panel does run very warm, but I dont believe it is as hot as yours....I took it for a 1/2 hour run today and was still able to place my hand on the panel....Question, could your full skid plate that you mounted be blocking some of the air flow and heating you up more than the norm?

I'm also thinking that the problem is coming from the skid plate... Yesterday, I recheck the timing to be sure the advance is correct, (my cheap timing light don't have the adjustment knob on it) I needed to do it by hand with a protractor, it's hard to be really precise with that, but I readjust it and it's now within the specs. I took it for 3/4 hour ride and (I think)it was a bit better... but it was pretty cold outside 65F, the panel top temperature was in the 130F range, so I will retest it on a warmer day (80-90F) to see if it helped and if that don't helped, I will remove the skid plate to see the difference. Meanwhile, I know that the perfect running temperature of this engine is 180F... but I want to know where should begin the danger zone ? I have removed the skid plate to see if the engine bay will stay colder... and the answer is yes... Well...at least you found the main cause of the heat build-up....the exhaust mainfold was the heating element for your "oven", with nowhere for the heat to go.....hopefully the holes you drill out will make a difference and cause some air circulation....

Max, You might also consider forced air by installing marine ducted fans that are low amperage to force air into the engine compartment. This way you would leave the bottom shielding intact. Just a thought... Here are some examples of marine fans Jeff Camo Mammoth

I wish I knew how to post pictures it would be easier to explain. I put mind under the bed in the frame on the drivers side blowing air into the engine compact on the one side so the air will circulate out the other side.Than I ran the wire for the switch up to the dash. It works for me..Hope this helps Bob

Thanks Bob for the picture... now I understand !!! This is a great idea, but I have already installed a 4 3/4" fan in the front of the engine bay cover... I may try to install an other one near the place where your mount yours, to suck the hot air out. I still thinking that if made a couple holes in the skid plate, air will circulate in a natural way, cooling down the exhaust manifold and probably solve the problem... I will try a couple things and get back to you guys with the verdict and some picture.
