Back when I took mine apart to clean all the sand out of it I adjusted it to light up R for reverse then set the lever arm on the transmission squarely in reverse. Next I adjusted the cable under the dash so it all connected without pushing or pulling. After you put the switch back on it allows for some minor adjustment. I found that if you make sure the transmission clicks into gear properly in each position with the light operating accurately you've got it licked. It takes a little patience but it is not that hard to figure out.
After doing mine several times I found that it was easiest starting with setting it in reverse gear and tweaking adjustments after that.
