The spring air was chilly, as Scylla took her few steps into the Battle School, the ground hard underfoot. The end of winter had taken with it the frost and snow, but the ground was still hard from chill, creating a good environment for movement. The chill in the air likewise stiffened Scylla's muscles, so she kept her pace at a lively trot, to get the blood flowing and to keep herself warm and ready to react. She directed her gaze to Saphira, the horse who was her opponent this day, and began her approach, trotting briskly towards the other mare.
Scylla did her best to match any movements Saphira made, coming at her strait on. Once she'd reached her goal of a few yards away from Saphira, Scylla began to circle, ears back and eyes watching the other mare with suspicion. A few wide circles were made, and then, when she had reached a point in her circle which she hoped was out of Saphira's range of vision, near the other mare's left, she reared up sharply. Putting her entire weight into the attack, aiming for the muscles in Saphira's upper left leg. These muscles ran from the stifle to the back, and they controlled saphira's ability to move the leg forward and lift it from the ground. Should the blow connect in it's intended place, it would probably create a painful bruise, and impair saphira's ability to move forward with it and possibly cause great pain when putting weight on the leg. Even should Saphira evade the attack, there was a chance that Scylla's hooves would graze or connect with other necessary muscles in Saphira's hindquarters-- possibly the hamstrings, if Saphira elected to move forward, or the soft place where the abdomen met the hind leg, if she elected to move backward. The former would probably cause damage similar to a blow to scylla's intended target, though backwards-- Saphira would have trouble putting the leg down, and putting weight on it-- and the latter might simply cause intense pain.
As soon as Scylla's hooves met the ground after that first attack, whether it met it's target or simply grazed the other mare, or even missed entirely, she readied herself for a second attack, sidestepping right towards Saphira's front. As soon as her forelegs were a foot from Saphira's, She moved foward a step and reared up slightly, bringing her hooves about a foot and a half off the ground. As fast as she could, while still keeping momentum in the attack, she brought her hooves down, aiming for the pastern joint on Saphira's front left leg. While there was a chance the attack would miss completely, but any counter attempts-- such as moving forward, rearing, or ramming-- might simply make the attack worse, causing scylla's hooves to meet the sensitive muscles on the front of Saphira's lower front leg.
Once again, when Scylla's hooves again met the ground, she was ready to burst into a flurry of movement, this time quickly moving backwards, until she was once more a few yards from Saphira. There, she once again took up circling, muscles tense and waiting for any return attacks from the other mare.
