The shards are given at random. So there is no garauntee you would receive one.
Secondly, if you do get a shard, killing yourself only puts it back up for grabs for other people. So that wouldn't really make a difference. YOu would have to get the shard, and then just not get the blood of the other horses.
And you don't know right away who has the shards until you see the tell tell scar on their body. it's never quite healed, and they are always possessed by it. With activating it, the only thing on their minds.
But you seem to have a cool concept, if you want to be a shard hater thats cool too.
