I was lucky to be given Triang ships and harbour as a little boy. Reinforced by Timothy's book of ships and the little Hippo books on British passenger ships and warships I was hooked.
I also loved airliners but apart from some Siku.plastic planes sent by a family friend I did not find a similar range till the 80s when I found the little Schabak planes at various airport shops.
My interest in and later work connected with the Cold War enabled me to add to my Triangs in the 70s onwards from various mainly German sources.
A new phase started from 2004 when I was able to visit Theale regularly. I also was helped by the late Ron Hughes to add some what-if models to my fleet.
My project to have a good sample of warships and major passenger or cargo ships from 1960 to the end of the Cold War is now nearly complete. But thanks to the Internet and this and other sites I can drool over other models and collections without owning them.
I was so lucky to catch the wave of ship collecting
