As promised, Will Jayne at Gwylam Models has now released decal sets for those tricky white hull lettering jobs. Where necessary, each sheet also contains funnel bands or logos. Many of Len Jordan's models contain alternative colour schemes but too often, getting the hull name markings sorted can become just too complicated. Until now, the best option has been to apply Letraset one character at a time. Will's decal sets make an awkward task much simpler. Three sets are on sale now and here are examples of how I've been able to use them.
Photo 1 is Len Jordan M118 C2-S type "American Ranger" completed as Isbrandsten's "Flying Enterprise 2" (the company's gift to Captain Carlsen as a reward for his bravery in trying to save the C1-B type "Flying Enterprise" in 1952).
Photo 2 shows Len Jordan M69 "Cairngowan" completed as "Manchester Engineer" 1965.
Photo 3 shows Len Jordan M119 C2-S-B1 type "Magnolia State" completed as Lykes Lines "Margaret Lykes".
The new decals are of the standard waterslide type and adhere very well. They are slightly shiny but this can be sorted with a light coat of matt varnish once they've had a chance to dry completely.
Hopefully, Gwylam will look at producing some other "nightmare" white hull lettering sets - STATES MARINE LINES and MOORE-McCORMACK LINES seem like good candidates.
I'm not sure if you can buy direct from Gwylam, but Martin Brown is carrying stocks.
Sorry about the dodgy photos - I've just got a new camera and I haven't sorted out the close-up settings yet.
John
