I've often been asked if mass market lighthouse models are any good for 1/1250 ship collectors, so I have been trawling the souvenir shops in the ports of europe and here's the result of this year's research.
Almost all the models are far too large. the typical lighthouse is around 1" to 2" tall and most souvenirs are larger than that (and the generic ones are mostly based on USA practice. However in Warnemunde (Rostock) I came across some models in this size range mouted on mahogany MDF bases with brass nameplates that seemed OK for 3 euros. In fact they scale at 1/900 and the details are not correct (Dornbusch - Hiddensee) should be 12 sided, not eight and the platforms on Warnemunde are not in the correct places but they are cast white metal and would look OK at the back of a 1/700 diorama when detached from the MDF base and set on a sandy shore. I'll report on French offerings later.
