Ken,
All my models are primed using black, this gives them a little more depth than white, even if they need a coat or two more to get good coverage. I and my painter have wanted to try washing our models for some time as it does give a great sense of shape and depth, however I have found that most collectors want pristine finishes with no tonal variation. I have to abide by that, still I do it to all my own models.
That reminds me, I might buy myself some Langton's (my very favourite models) to paint while I'm waiting for my uni work to be assesed.
