Painters of toy soldiers have tended to paint the figure black before adding colour to the skin & clothing, emphasising the folds & creases. If you first paint the castings with a well thinned black undercoat then spray a coloured basecoat (white or grey) from slightly above the model, a similar effect can be achieved. Finally paint the decks & the livery required and a few rust streaks and growth and gloss varnish on the boot topping.
