Hi Will,
The comments here got me wondering how I could inject a bit of personality into my resin models, and when I compared them to my metal ones, I realised that a big difference is in the painting finish. On merchant vessels (metal) the spray painting usually doesn't cover the side deck walkways under the overhangs very well, so these tend to be emphasised, thus giving the superstructure shape. I took one of my Len Jordan models, mixed up some Paynes Grey, White, Vandyke Brown (water colours), added a little soap for adhesion, thinned it well down, and washed it into the walkways. Instant improvement! So I washed it under the boats as well and when it dried, followed up with a fine, darker, wash.
I'm now starting to wonder if we shouldn't be adding shape to all our models in this way. Being water colour, it's easily removed so it's not a disaster if it's not appealing.
I'm so pleased with the effect, I'm going to try very light washes around the deck edges and hatches, and I suggest anyone reading this gives it a go.
Cheers, Ken.
