Hi Jeff.
There's a small Tirpitz museum a few kilometres outside the town at Alta. It's just a wooden hut really and contains mainly surviving bits and pieces and photos. Most of the displays celebrate the work done by Norwegian resistance in spying on the German activities in the Altafjord and the X-craft submarine attack on Tirpitz. There's a not very helpful museum website at http://www.tirpitz-museum.no/?id=15
When I was visiting Tromsų, I met an old boy who witnessed the 1944 air attack which finally sank the Tirpitz. His English wasn't too good and my Norwegian is limited to say the least, but he was able to point out the ship's final position and the flight paths of the attacking bombers.
Having only ever read about the Tirpitz story, it was all rather surreal and strangely moving to actually be out in a snowstorm on the fjords where it all happened.
