Roger has emailed me with his thoughts plus some photos regarding the Atlas pair of Bismark and Hood.
"Hi John,
Attached are reduced jpegs of the Atlas models. The bases can be removed by undoing the two screws and the models do not fall apart when the screws are removed. The detail is not much worse than Argonaut and, despite my suspicions, I cannot find anything that has definitely come from a previous model of either Hood or Bismarck (but I do not have the Casadio, Esci, Revell Bismarck model). The boxes say made in China but the Bismarck model is way, way better than the 1/1000 Forces of Valour model and the price averaged over the full set of eight is lower. The hull of Bismarck is much finer towards the stern than other cheap models and, even if it is too fine, it looks more correct than the others. The really impressive thing about the Hood is the bow view which shows the inward sloping armoured hull above the waterline and the anti-torpedo bulge below. At only a quarter of the price of Neptun, I think that they are good value and I hope that they can be imported for sale in shops".
Comparison of the Airfix 1/1200 kit, Hornby HK and Atlas versions.
Thanks Roger. I haven't actually seen these models advertised yet. I did have a look at the Atlas Editions website, but they don't list the ship series - only aircraft. Where should I look? I don't think I need yet more Bismarks and Hoods, but still, if the price is right ........
