I've been collecting aerial colour photos of merchant ships for some time and for just this reason.
Although I'm not keen on the pale green colour that Wirral uses for teak decks, when it comes to general colouring, particularly of freighter decks, current Wirral models are extremely well researched and difficult to catch out, I find. No other model producer, with the possible exception of Classic/Carat, come close. Wirrals make a good starting point.
As Mike says, 1250ships.com is a good source of model photos, with quite a lot of Wirrals.
The huge photo collection on shipsnostalgia.com can also provide a lot of clues.
