I haven't done much more than drill a few portholes.
On the subject of special characters I think that Microsoft Word and Open Office have a number of special fonts which can be accessed using "Insert" "Character" the ones to look at are WingDings and Webdings in OO, not sure about Word. OO comes with a number of Asian,Cyrillic,Arabic and other character sets.
I think there have been postings on here or the 1250 board about making waterslide transfers.
