Traditionally this would have been the compass platform, together with direction finding equipment and searchlights etc. I suspect the old-style Master would have taken a dim view if the area wasn't properly wood decked. Weren't they originally constructed of wood anyway so as not to affect the compass? Of course by 1956 things had changed and much of the equipment was remote operated.
Aerial colour photos of these ships are rare but there is a good overhead shot of the 1961 Northern Star showing the compass platform area fully wood decked.
Unless anyone knows where the builders' model is located I doubt anyone will argue with whatever colour you choose to paint it, John!
