Hi Don! Nice to hear from you. The radar mast can be improved with a suitable aerial. I suspect you may well be correct about the mystery square being associated with signalling. I haven't managed to track down a good photo of this ship but this postcard faintly shows wires connecting from the mast/funnel rigging line down to somewhere on top of the bridge.
I'll add the upright as shown on the CM version and paint the area within the square in deck colour. I didn't think it was a pool - honestly.
