Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice. The two castings which I acquired yesterday have been re-painted in a thick coat of gloss white (looks like Dulux to me) and this has subsequently been chipped and scratched to the point where stripping will be essential. The effort needed to carry out a convincing "factory" restoration is probably equal to doing a detailing job. So I shall probably go for the painted deck, new masts option. If I can achieve this but manage to leave the basic casting untouched, I suppose it would always be possible to re-strip at some later stage, if necessary. This seems to be a particular advantage when working with the tough Triang metal. No disrespect to Martin's replacement masts, but the Tri-ang originals look, to my eyes, rather heavy and obvious. I've been looking at some nice photos of Antilles and Flandre which appeared in the September 2008 issue of "Shipping", and the masts have a very delicate appearance. I suspect that new masts knocked up from brass wire would enhance what appear to be very neat and detailed castings. At only £4 a hull, this must be a cost effective way of adding two nice models to the collection.
