German manufacturers use an adhesive gauze which is not available in the UK. It usually works well but can cause problems where the paint on the model is still soft. The nearest equivalent double sided gauze that I have found here is Duck Carpet to Floor Tape. Suggest that the recipient opens the box flat, grips the hull and peels the box away from the model, not the other way round. The foam pads need to be rigid enough to keep the model pressed against the tape in transit and to keep the box sides apart but white, rigid polystyrene foam can attach itself permanently to black funnel tops, so use a layer of softer polyurethane foam between the model and the rigid foam (like Albatros does with his new models).
Will's tip about lighter fuel works but needs care with models finished in enamel paints, if the paint is relatively fresh and soft.
