Miss New Orleans Pageant Celebrates 78 Years of Royalty
Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend highlights the Hollywood Theme
New Orleans, LA, November 15, 2008- The Miss New Orleans Pageant kicks off its 78th year with a Hollywood theme. The pageants subtitle this year is ¡§Hooray for Hollywood¡¨. The pageant is scheduled for November 22 & 23, 2008 at the Best Western Landmark Hotel in Metairie Louisiana.
¡§While looking through past program books from the Miss New Orleans pageant I discovered that Dorothy Lamarr won the title in its second year,¡¨ said Shelly Winters Black the pageant director. ¡§You may remember Dorothy in those Bing Crosby and Bob Hope Road Movies made during Hollywood's Golden Years.¡¨
Seeing Dorothy Lamarr's pictures in the program book inspired Shelly to incorporate the Hollywood theme for this year¡¦s pageant. ¡§Because both Hollywood and the pageant business are Glamour Industries it seemed like a great fit¡¨ said Mrs. Black. ¡§Dorothy won the contest in 1931 and used her pageantry royalty to capture Tinsel Town royalty.¡¨
The pageant will use the image of Marilyn Monroe to symbolize its theme. The opening number will feature girls dancing to the song ¡§Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend¡¨ dressed in Cocktail Wear colored white, pink, gold and silver. The girls will give their best Marilyn impersonation while waving gloved hands with rhinestone jewelry. This Year¡¦s Choreorgrapher is Louisiana¡¦s own Brian Wade Applewhite.
To raise the level of glamour up another notch several other fun events are scheduled.
Ć A fashion show featuring the latest in pageant and bridal designs will be staged while the points are tallied up. This glamorous fashion event is staged by designer Natalie Piraro Bendy of Rhinestone Runway using queens and other celebrities.
Ć Queens with titles & contestants will compete in a Celebrity Cook off on Saturday November 22 at 5 pm till 6:30. Title holders will present their favorite dishes to be judged by local celebrities. The event will be a Black-Tie and formal attire event complete with a red carpet adorning the entrance.
Ć An exhibition of new works by renown New Orleans artist Sylvia Doucet Stanton and her new student Shelly Winters Black will premier during the Cook Off. A painting by each artist will be raffled off at the Contest on Sunday night.
All events will be presented at the Metairie Best Western Landmark Hotel located at 2601 Severn Avenue, Metairie, Louisiana 70002 and we are still accepting entries. So call Shelly to sign up.
¡§There will be lots of fun, fashion and glamour,¡¨ says pageant director Shelly, ¡§and we are still looking for more celebrity judges for the events, so contact me if you would like to get involved.¡¨
