front discbrakes & ride hight Posted by kempman on November 6, 2009, 3:50 am 88.74.12.220 Hello everybody, could anyone of you identify that brake caliper? It’s in my ’65 Galax 2dHt and I don’t know witch brakesetup is installed nor I know if the spindles are originally ’65 stock. As I’d like to swap those callipers against better stuff – have to know what will fit… Also I’d like to lower the ridehight a bit, nearly as low or similar they had in NASCAR these days in ’65, which would be the best way to go? Just cutting the springs seems not to be the perfect idea. I appreciate any suggestions and thank you in advance, Jakob  Post a Response

The spindle casting # would help out a lot. As far as dropping the front end the best option is drop spindles unfortunately I don't know of any "actual Galaxie" drop spindles in the aftermarket. There is a place selling what they call a Galaxie drop spindle, but all it is is a Granada spindle and being a Granada part the steering geometry is all wrong. I bought it in 2004 from Dearborn Classics. At the time it was listed as '77 Granada full assembly. SO, Daze, it is a Granada set. See photo I think the confusion on fit is in model years. The '65-'68 Galaxies have more forgiveness in suspension adjustment than '64- older. You do have to either shave the control arm a bit for the tie rod or get a tie rod outer for the '77. I ahven't had any issues with it and it aligned up fine on my car with adjustment to spare either way. I have heard the drop issue too but it doesn't seem to have affected my car. MAYBE an inch? but the old springs are as likely the cause for that. again it is most likely a difference in model years, the frame mounts being just that bit different even if the rest is the same. Forum Administrator out to my garage and looked at the granada calipers on my Mustang to see, they were similar but not identical but since there were different I decided not to say. I guess too, that the calipers are Granada. Compared them with a discbrake conversion kit using Granada parts, I got from "drop'n'stop", they are similar. But the spindles are not similar. I'm with you Daze, that the best way to lower the front end would be by using "dropped" spindles. I'll take a wheel off and compare exactly the spindles and note the casting marks. So they are from the 70's and they're looking bulkyer then my compared Granada spindles. Could anyone tell from witch donorcar they came of with that #.
