What kind of metal is the trim made of? Posted by Jayz66 on September 21, 2009, 8:53 pm 98.25.214.53 OK, so maybe I'm confused, but I thought that the trim pieces on my Galaxie were made of aluminum. Windshield and glass trim is very shiny, so maybe that is chrome, but the fender trim and grill pieces, etc. seem to have a duller finish. So I always thought they were made of aluminum. Now, I guess I just don't know. You see, I just bought some aluminum polish, Mother's I think it's called, and started to polish my aluminum rims. Instructions say the white paste will turn black as it removes oxidized aluminum. It works great and turns black just like it says it should. See photo of wheel. (Gotta put some shiny shoes on the Gal when she comes home from the paint shop this week). Yes Daze, I will post plenty of pictures. FYI - I polished only the flat part of the dish from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock - nothing else. So I am thinking this polish stuff will really make my grill look nice (No, not the barbeque grill ). It did remove a lot of the 43 years of "whatever" was on my grill, but it never turns black and the metal does not take on the mirror-like finish that the wheels are getting. The difference is it is anodized. The anodization protects the aluminum from corrosion but also does tend to get milky white with age. You can get the grim off as you see but to bring it to a shine you have to get the anodization off. Big hassle and a lot of work. Around the windshield and side and back glass is stainless. The trim at the bottom of the car is anodized and turned milky. On a 65, the trim around the front wheel well is stainless and can be used on a 66. But the back wheel well is different and won't fit. Good luck on getting it all to match up. I will be deleting some of the trim on my next paint job. There are companies that can reanodize your stuff, but I have not checked on pricing.  Post a Response

Posted by racecat on September 26, 2009, 10:51 am, in reply to "more info..." 174.50.204.206 I am going through yhis right now on a 63 1/2 .I have found that you can use a water d/a and 180 grit hook and loop disc and sand the anodizing off ,then lightly sand with 400 wet and then polish on a medium coarse wheel with green compound and finish on soft wheel with white compound. Wash with soap and water ,mask and paint indent with simi-gloss and it looks great. If your car is kept inside it should stay shiney with a little mothers now and then. If kept outside maybe use ZOOPS, I've heard this stuff works just kind of expensive. Tom 66 gt350 63 1/2 429  Post a Response
