62 front end Posted by steve on April 23, 2009, 11:20 pm 75.156.32.145 So I was mulling over which thing I should fix first on the 62.I want to go on a few road trips this summer and I want to have the car very safe and reliable. The frame has a few issues that will require some welding and the steering has way too much looseness in it, so it probably could use a rebuild. I wanted to get your guy,s advice on the matter. I was looking at the Kanter rebuild kits from $229 to $333. should I replace all the bushings? the center link, idler arm? I thought about taking it in to a shop to see what they suggest. What work have you done on your steering set up in the past?, and how much could I expect to pay for a shop rebuild?  Post a Response

I have not yet gone in to the front suspension of my 62, but.... There were no special tools needed to take it apart. Just some really big wrenches and sockets. Best advise I can give is measure your shims on the UCAs when you take them out and then when the UCAs go back in make sure the the correct thickness of shims is put back in, that way you can get it to the alignment shop. Also I would spend about a week before you do the job daily spraying all the nuts and bolts with penetrating oil so they are easier to take apart.  Post a Response

Re: 62 front end Posted by bigiron on April 26, 2009, 6:51 pm, in reply to "Re: 62 front end" 96.239.137.201 get a good spring compressor, this will help make it easy. take pictures. i did mine while in the process of a frame off resto, so it was a while between disassembly, sandblasting,priming,painting to reassembly. get a good shop manual, this will help with the process. i feel the worst of the job is the upper shaft bushings but if you take your time and pay close attention you will be fine... hope this helps you.jason  Post a Response

I was under the car today sizeing up the steering and seeing what state the bushings were in. Some of them look ok and yet others were missing bits and pieces of rubber. And , oh ya.. everything has a thick coating of grease and black dirt on them from all the years. I will have to PB everything before hand. I was trying to get the centering spring cover off the control valve, and even those 2 screws wouldn,t even budge. I was reluctent to pound on it too hard as I noticed the the side of the cover is cracked a bit from someone turning the screws in much too hard. I did find out tho, that with the car jacked up. the steering wheel takes 4 full turns to go completely from left to right. So to check the steering box gear fluid level, do I have to take the cover with the 3 screws in it off to see the level. Cuz just looking down the filler hole doesn,t realy tell me much.  Post a Response
