Media blasting Posted by Jay on November 3, 2008, 5:36 pm 24.40.213.188 OK, I am already tired of sanding! Since I do not have a workspace of my own, I think I need to have the car blasted professionally so that the rust is properly treated. I will have the trim holes welded closed at the same time. Then etching primer, etc. I have a few questions. Any advice along these lines is appreciated. My first question - Should I have the car blasted and primed with the motor out of the car? That would make the most sense, right? Second question - If I wait until the motor is back in the car, what precautions must I take when it comes time to media blast the car? Third question - If the car is in the primer stage, how long can I wait until final painting? I need to save some money first.  Post a Response

Re: Media blasting Posted by bigiron on November 3, 2008, 8:03 pm, in reply to "Media blasting" 96.239.134.64 we had parts of our 62 vert soda blasted and it turned out great.i sanded the outside of the panels and had the insides sodablasted. i would do any blasting with the engine out.as far as the primer,as long as it stays in a moisture free environment you shouldnt have any problems until you get to painting.  Post a Response

Soda is not hard on the panels and is easier to clean up after the fact. Sand can warp panels and I have also herd of people not being able to get all the sand out and then little bits of it working loose and ending up in your interior over the next 10 years. I would take the "motor out" concept one step further. Strip the car completely: windows, motor, interior, and any thing else that can be pulled, prior to blasting that way all the panels can be easily treated and no important parts will be damaged in the process. I can not stress enough what bigiron said, "as far as the primer,as long as it stays in a moisture free environment you shouldn't have any problems until you get to painting." Absolutely NO moisture!!!!!!! Part of what makes primer primer is that it is porous and moisture will soak in to it and rust the panels under the primer.  Post a Response

Jay, one more thing ... Posted by bigiron on November 4, 2008, 7:03 pm, in reply to "I agree 100% " 96.239.134.64 the soda will disolve and you will not see a trace of it like sand or media!should you decide to sodablast be sure to wash anything blasted with dawn dish soap before you do any sanding,grinding,bodywork etc. sodablasting leaves a film on the surface, if it isnt removed first it can be ground into the metal and cause problems later on.(priming,painting). when finished washing take your air blower and get all the water out of the seams.once you soda blast you will never strip a car with sand paper again. sorry for the long post...  Post a Response

Beware of soda blasting Posted by just dropped by on November 4, 2008, 10:12 pm, in reply to "Media blasting" 71.124.175.197 I was told by a supplier of the soda that there was some as yet not understood phenominum that caused the paint to fall off in sheets a year or two after painting a car that had been soda blasted. This bankrupted a body shop that did many vehicles this way. Eastwood said it is not a problem so long as the car is properly washed after blasting. Go to the autobodystore.com forum and learn about Picklex 20 before you do any priming. You should go there before you do any painting of any kind.  Post a Response

I have read that a vinegar based wash of the blasted areas will neutralize the soda. We all know that baking soda can neutralize battery acid, so it makes sense that the vinegar (weak acid) will neutralize the soda if applied liberally and then rinsed. As for me, I will probably go with more standard blasting material such as silica, or bead blasting.  Post a Response

Phosphoric acid is also a good option It too will neutralize the soda...
