-er.... header
My Mustang has a Unisteer Rac and pinion steering unit and one of the downfalls of this unit is only one stile of headers work and they are over $500.00 a set. I didn't want to pay that kind of money so I decided to get a quality set of headman 88300 which have ball type collectors and 1 & 5/8" tubes. They cost me about $160.00 for the set. When I installed them the fit was fantastic they cleared the shock towers by at least 1/8" and more than that in most places. The problem was the steering shaft for my Unisteer unit had to pass directly through the middle of the number 5 cylinder tube. I was fairly sure I would have a problem like this when I ordered them so I had already decided I would cut the tube and relocate it to clear the shaft.
This picture shows just how much I had to modify the tub. Like I said before the original tube location would have gone right through the middle of the steering shaft.
After getting it all welded up I took an ankle grinder to the welds and am very pleased with the result!!!
I was worried about the thickness of the header tubing and did not want to weaken it so I was very Conservative with my grinding which is why it is not perfectly smooth. My local powder coater does ceramic coating so I am thinking a good covering of that will go a long way to make it look as if they were never modified.
If it aint broke..... modify it anyway!!!!
