A few of the cars I had when I first became interested in the Galaxie and other cars are shown below. I've had a few others but don't have pictures of them. These include a 1963 Mercury Monteray station wagon with the woody sides and roof rack. Bought it for $100 from an old farmer. Great fun to drive and when I first got it, it had studded snow tires. I really enjoyed peeling out on them and hearing the studs ping in the wells as they popped out! I also had a 1968 Fairlane and '66 falcon station wagon. That car was a tough little bugger! It just wouldn't die! Most of it was in pretty bad shape, but it always started and went just about anywhere, even in the sub zero weather when none of our other cars would start. Of course we froze inside because the heater didn't work very well and all the rust holes! It finally died one day when the front wheel bearing froze up and it twisted the axle off. Nice shower of sparks as the front hit the ground and parts flew everywhere. We pulled it over got our stuff out and walked away.
After those cars My dad bought a used Galaxie, 1967, metallic bronze with white interior. I loved that car the moment it pulled in the driveway. I offered to trade my dad the Fairlane for it but no deal. A year later he blew the motor in a blizzard and we towed it home. My sister was moving to OK and needed a car so I gave her the Fairlane. My dad offered to buy a car to replace it but I told him I'll take the Galaxie! I bought a used motor for it , Learned how to rebuild it and put it in the Gal. Then a couple months later My mom T-boned a Camero that pulled out in front of her and that was the death of that car. I was so bummed but more relieved that my mom didn't get killed.
Here is a before and after shot of it.
I found an LTD in the junk yard NEXT DOOR! We lived right by it, I loved walking around in there! Got it for $75. It needed the motor and transmission which I had from the Galaxie. Got most of the other parts from the junk yard to fix it up. That LTD was loaded, it had power doors locks, power windows, power seats, Cloth with center arm rests front and back, AC, Tinted windows, Disc brakes and a few other things. It was in really solid shape.
I had a friend who worked auto body fix the rust and paint it. I traded the job for two VW bugs and an old Ford truck. The truck ran but not the Bugs. I had that car for a few years until I needed to buy a truck for the work I was doing. I missed that car a week after I sold it and was determined to get another one some day.
That was in 1981. It would be 1995 before I did finally get one.
Which became this
Some where during the time I had both the '67 and '66, I bought a '63 Falcon Futura.
Then I sold the '66 and bought a '63 Falcon Futura convertible to restore. My first Convertible. That made me want a Galaxie convertible so I sold the Falcons and that brings us up to date!
