My first guess would be a leak in the master cylinder leaking into the booster, assuming you have one. If it does, it will weaken the rubber diaphragm and cause it to be soft. after you overcome the initial loss it will then boost as normal. That means you will feel resistance in the pedal for a moment then it will suddenly get vacuum and grab hard. Or it could be the proportioning valve is faulty.
