This may not surprise you, but you seem to contradict popular opinion. 
What you describe makes plenty of sense and is a very reasonable proposition.
This offcenteredness that I am wanting to address is a condition that has existed for 25 years, or so, so this is not about handling, or ride quality. I've spent a lot of money recently rebuilding the engine and dressing up the front end and I have access to help and advice that can assist in getting some of these things done. The rear end is noticeably offset and it has always bugged me, so now seems like the time to address it.
