Baraqel enjoys chicken. However, having Maverick charging at him directly head-on isn’t all that comfortable, because he’s too close to that pesky blind spot. So Baraqel, yet uninjured and limber as all hell, veers sharply to the right as Maverick comes closer. What this means is that when Maverick slams into him, his shoulder collides with the meaty side of Baraqel’s shoulder. Immediately, Baraqel’s balance is shot entirely; Maverick is taller, and this angle, while sparing the point of his shoulder, does little for his stability. He scrambles, his hooves flailing ungracefully beneath him for any sort of purchase on the ground. Maverick’s teeth scrape some skin off of his withers, which is annoying but hardly critical.
Baraqel’s shoulder, though, is sore, and will only get worse. He lets the momentum from Maverick’s ram further help him veer to the right, which sounds a lot more graceful than it actually was.
In reality, he sort of scrambles like a shot pigeon, his eyes wide and his head high.
Why are there no cameras in Legend? I know at least six horses that would pay to see that moment.
But in any case, Baraqel regains some semblance of footing in the time it takes Maverick to veer away. Baraqel keeps moving, and so when Maverick launches his kick, it hits Baraqel’s stifle. The power of the blow knocks his already-precarious balance out of whack again, and he must stagger once more to regain his balance. Fortunately, the stifle is muscular, and because the battle is over, the deep, penetrating pain won’t have time to set in until he gets home.
Baraqel’s arrogant swagger is going to need some modifications after this.
And as he slows to turn around and make some sort of witty-jerk remark to Maverick, he hears a snap like his own Lightning. Now he stops abruptly, blinking wide amber eyes at the other Viper.
Baraqel would make a horrible medic, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t stand there with a stunned expression that clearly says, “Oh, shit.”
