Of course we no longer live in times where the sport of bullbaiting is legal, nor is it warranted. I must say though that when I was a kid I knew a dog that could take down bulls or cows on command. This dog was a pit/terrier type bulldog. He was a smaller/medium sized dog and he wasn't high energy...or I should say he wasn't hyper or overly driven...he was a calm dog generally, but did possess a drive to please his owner and do his job. He was definitely healthy and athletic or he couldn't do such a task.
When the owner was having trouble catching a cow or bull he could holler out at his bulldog, Pete, to go catch that cow and point to the one he needed help with and Pete would run along side the bull/cow and bite at its shoulders until the bull/cow lowered its head toward Pete. Pete would then simply latch onto that bull/cow's nose and the bull would literally flip over and fall straight to the ground. Pete would just hang on and hold him there until the owner came and gave him a release command. I've seen what it takes to perform such a task and I would say most any one of my dogges are physically capable...they can run for long periods of time and they can jump up pretty high and I think they have the tenacity to hang onto prey for extended periods of time. Once they set their minds to something they are very focused. Now, do I want to participate in bullbaiting?? No. I don't own any cattle, don't need help taking down bulls/cows and I have no desire to work my dogs in such a way. Do I think they could physically do the job? Yes.
