the Bulldog cannot tackle a bull. Can an Olde???? Well since bull baiting is not legal I guess we will never know.I plainly stated that we should look at the dogs and ask ourselves is this dog capable of tackling a bull. When you look at a dog and can easily see that it is physically not able to run for any reasonable distance or jump more than 4" off the ground, then you have completely defeated the purpose of what these dogs were created for. Would you say it's okay to breed Bloodhounds that can't smell? Is it okay to breed sight hounds that are blind? I know this is extreme but it's to simply make a point. The whole point of the Olde is to get them back in the sporting group. I wish I lived somewhere that I could use my dogs for pig hunting to see what they are capable of. I also have harnesses for my dogs to let them weight pull. I have never done this competetively but I know they are capable
You are also correct about recreations in the breeders eye. That is the biggest problem with this breed. Forget the standard lets all breed something cute.It amazes me to see people with websites showing the old pictures of the early bulldogs and a nice article about the history of how bulldogs came to be, then you look at their dogs and see short, overly wrinkled, extremely heavy dogs, with no muzzle. I remember a couple of years ago a woman who was advertising blue and red merle Oldes. Do you think this is okay? They were supposedly healthy and athletic but what does the standard say?
All of this being said, I think your dogs are beautiful. I also think your dogs probably make excellent pets. It is obvious from your pictures that all of your dogs are very well taken care of. I also respect that you openly said"I don't even like to call my dogs Oldes they are more English". My question to you is why bother with Oldes? Why not just breed healthy EB's?
Also I think you have taken some of this a little to personal. I don't think anyone called your dogs "Crappy" If they did I apologize for the poor choice of wording. This is not a matter of insulting someone, it is a matter of principal and purpose.
I could go on for days but I will just summarize my feelings. This breed is my favorite of all dogs and it just hurts me to see the straying into 100 different directions. The standard needs to be less broad and we all need to be working in the same direction. Have you noticed all the different registries and ideas that fall under the title OEB? For this breed to ever be truly recognized as the quality animal it is we must be consistent.
