I'm sorry for your loss and I hope the mom is ok.
Pyro has nothing to do with how the dogs are taken care of. Its cause from and imbalance of hormones in the female when she's in heat. The imbalance causes the infection when the dog is bred. I've never heard of a dog having a case of Pyro and still carrying puppies.
Pyro is much more common the people realize and if you breed dogs you are going to have dogs that get it, that's what I have always been told by long time breeders and from vets.
I would be more worried about canine herpes or a Micro plasma infection. They are both highly contagious and tend to cause early abortions in females.
