The morning was bright, cloudless, and cool – autumn was now well-advanced, and every breath brought with it the sweet edge of winter. The day had begun with much promise: a familiar energy thrummed just beneath his skin and tingled at the back of his mind. His elemental power, lost for so much of his life had been restored at last. The black stallion reached out with his thoughts, probed the earth for her vast, soothing presence – and felt nothing. Phyr couldn’t hear the heartbeat of the sleeping earth. He shook his scarred head in confusion and lowered his muzzle to the loam, upset the carpet of decaying leaves with a hoof – a tiny spark reached out and cracked the foliage, a thin wisp of smoke curling up from the burn. Something draconian within him stirred, its scales grating against his soul, startling him into clarity. The day that had begun with such promise suddenly felt like a blanket of knives draped across his withers. He controlled lightning, not earth. The ancient pride of Dragonshade was lost to him. And that was how Elemmírë found him, standing rigid with his muzzle pressed to his chest as though tied there, black eyes open and unseeing. When she spoke the swarthy beast only glanced in her direction at first, so great was his distress, until he sensed something about her presence that was familiar. Of course it was nothing physical – Elemmírë, unique as she was in appearance, would have instantly been recognized as friend or foe had Phyr ever come across her in his past (and he had not). Instead, it was something about her energy, something that he couldn’t place… Something that was swept away by his silent seething envy at seeing her intimacy with the earth. But it was no fault of hers that Phyr found himself in this predicament, and so he wasn’t angry. She had addressed him as a teacher (finally, he thought – he had searched the Academy for so long). Voice toneless and numb, he responded. “I cannot speak to the earth.” A long pause. He clenched his teeth, tension quite visible in the sinews of his jaw. “Why?”
